Maine Coons are easy to care for cats. Their fur is usually not combed too much, but they are a long-haired breed and need regular brushing. Combing them is done with a metal comb with teeth although once or twice a week is enough. Maine Coons also like to be brushed daily with a soft brush. Maine Coon kittens are easy to train and have already been trained here to use a seasal nail posts and litter box. Maine Coons are active and playful, energetic and trainable in interactive "fetch the ball" games.
The Maine Coon cat is a slow growing breed with a semi-long coat. This means, unlike the fur of the Persian cat, that a Maine Coon's hair will be longer around the neck, belly, legs and tail. Occasionally, Maine Coon cats can have long hair as early as 5 or 6 months of age - some even as kittens. The quality of a kitten's fur doesn't mean much because it often changes as the kitten grows. Sometimes, the denser and shorter the coat is at a young age, the fuller and heavier it becomes at maturity. In general, the growth of a full coat takes up to the second year of a Maine Coon's life. The exact time frame certainly depends on different bloodlines, but also on the individual genetic makeup of each kitten. Some bloodlines produce denser, longer coats, others have been purposely bred to produce thinner coats. Both have their advantage. The heavier, full coat creates the wow factor, but sometimes they need more frequent brushing. Thinner coats often require much less grooming due to the lack of undercoat. Breeding females often shed their fur during pregnancy. Breeding males often shed some of their fur during the mating season. This is due to hormonal changes. Rest assured that ALL registered Maine Coon kittens will eventually have fluffy tails and collars around their necks when they get older, especially once they are neutered. Diet also plays an important role in coat quality. This is a breed that requires a lot of patience! It certainly takes patience to get a good kitten from a reputable cattery, and it also takes patience to watch them develop into their amazing, natural beauty.
Maine Coons are known for their gentle and docile temperament. They are known as "gentle giants" with a relaxed attitude and affectionate demeanor that make them great pets. Males and females can be equally affectionate.
